Lithium batteries: Green energy driving the future

At a time when technological innovation is reshaping the world, lithium batteries have become the “energy code” driving modern life. From smartphones to electric vehicles, from large-scale energy storage batteries to precision aviation equipment, lithium batteries are everywhere, providing sustainable and reliable power.

Do you know how lithium battery technology works? Simply put, lithium batteries rely on the movement of lithium ions between the positive and negative electrodes during charging and discharging. When charging, lithium ions leave the positive electrode and embed into the negative electrode through the electrolyte. During discharging, the ions flow back to the positive electrode. This unique mechanism gives lithium batteries many advantages:

  • Ultra-high energy density: 460-600 Wh/kg, 6-7 times that of lead-acid batteries.

  • Long lifespan: Lithium iron phosphate batteries can reach 10,000 cycles at 1C charge/discharge.

  • High voltage: Single cell voltage of 3.2V or 3.7V.

In the lithium battery family, ternary lithium batteries and lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) batteries are the “twin stars” of the industry.

  • Ternary lithium batteries use nickel-cobalt-manganese or nickel-cobalt-aluminum as the positive electrode. With extremely high energy density exceeding 300 Wh/kg, they power electric vehicles beyond 600 km on a single charge, solving range anxiety. Their excellent low-temperature performance ensures strong power even at -20℃, making them ideal for northern regions.

  • Lithium iron phosphate batteries excel in safety and thermal stability. Even when punctured or squeezed, they are unlikely to catch fire or explode. With a cycle life over 4,000 times and 20%-30% lower cost than ternary batteries, they dominate energy storage systems, electric buses, and are preferred by companies like Tesla and BYD.

Lithium batteries continue to revolutionize multiple sectors:

  • Consumer electronics: Extending battery life in smartphones and laptops.

  • Electric vehicles (EVs): Driving the green travel revolution.

  • Energy storage: Storing solar and wind energy for peak-shaving and valley-filling applications.

Scientific research continues to push boundaries. Innovations include new electrode materials, structural optimization for low-temperature performance, and solid-state lithium battery technology. The “Lithium Life” team at Shandong University of Science and Technology has developed advanced recycling solutions, maximizing both efficiency and environmental protection.

As Elon Musk famously said, “lithium batteries are the new oil.” Global giants are competing for lithium resources, and future iterations of ternary and lithium iron phosphate batteries promise higher performance. With continuous innovation, lithium batteries will illuminate the future of green energy, powering smarter, cleaner, and more sustainable technologies.
